Fettle Animation: Visiting Professional notes

Speaker: Kath Shackleton

Runs animation company with her husband Zach - Went from being just the two of them to a full animation studio. There work has been nominated for children's BAFTA.

Be persistent - You need to make a difference, tell people you are there, believe in yourself - with the economy as it is, it is hard to get jobs - they wont be handed to you on a plate - highly competitive market

Made a series of animations to relate to real life experiences of life during World War II - Animation is quite simplistic with matte colours in order to attract a younger audience. - Getting the commission - before which did a piece with Bradford Media Museum, Fragile Stones, she learnt that TV people cannot take risks - she feels that if she doesn't take creative risks, she's not doing her job. They want to know you - they need to ensure that your work is safe and guaranteed to be aired.

BBC Learning - went to a networking event and met many people, including people from Disney. Sent a pitch to animation part - never do more than one page and include hardly any text - everyone is too busy so if they see alot of text they will just move on to the next pitch. With everything 100 animation ideas you pitch, 1 is bound to get there. Production was accepted.

Creative Network - sign up to it - get a little bit more budget - Narrow deadlines, ended up getting more money however it was a hard journey. There are no job guarantees - you need to ensure that you have another afterwards and work as hard as you can.
